This was a difficult city site with steep slopes and a collapsing retaining wall and an ancient maple. Vern was a plant enthusiast and a long term client of the nursery and one of his main requests was the use of a wide range of interesting plant material. The result was a garden with strong structure of large weathered boulders that allowed many pockets for a choice selection of woodland perennials and understory trees and shrubs.
